#20 Books of Summer 2021 hosted by Cathy at 246 Books

I’m hastily posting before the end of the month, that I am looking forward to again taking part in the #20BooksofSummer Challenge hosted by Cathy who writes the marvellous 746books.com blog.

Since moving jobs at the start of this year, I will no longer have a long summer holiday in which to read therefore I am going to set myself the modest target of 10 books this summer! I have to admit that after a long day spent mostly staring at a screen, there are some evenings when I just can’t face reading for an extended period, so I definitely cannot consume books as quickly as I used too. Looking back at my post from this time last year I notice that The Mirror and the Light is making a second appearance, which is a prime example of my lack of reading time over the past 12 months! I am hoping to re-discover my reading mojo and just as importantly I shall look forward to reading the reviews that other bloggers, taking part in this challenge, will post.

My list contains a mixture of MG and adult books, physical and e-books. One, Purple Hibiscus, is a re-read as it is this month’s choice for one of my book groups, and the solitary non-fiction title, The Book About Getting Older reflects my new job in an NHS library. Several of the MG books have been sent to me for review by publishers and one was a very kind gift from a blogger friend, Rachael, bellisdoesbooks.wordpress.com which I feel terribly guilty for still having in my TBR stack.

7 physical books from my TBR
3 e-books, 2 of which are book group choices

So, here it is; one summer, three months, 10 books! Thank you Cathy for hosting!

    1. Thanks very much Cathy. I must admit that of all the books on my list it is the one I would not choose for myself, but I have to host the book group at work, so will have to persevere!

  1. I’m going for 10 books this year too! Old Tabby Bronte looks wonderful – is it available in paperback? I loved Harley Hitch and have The Swallow’s Flight on my TBR. Good luck with your challenge!

    1. Hi Mary, hopefully you can make a start on your challenge this week 😊 At the time I bought Old Tabby Bronte, it was only available as a Kindle e-book. It is a short novella and written entirely as a monologue in Yorkshire dialect, so will provide some variety to my reading. Good luck with your challenge too and have a lovely half-term in the sunshine 🌞

  2. I love the variety, Veronica. You’ve now tempted me to join in with this challenge but my reviewing commitments dominate at the moment so it’s probably wiser for me not to this year. I’m looking forward to finding out what you think of your ten choices. Good luck!

    1. Thank you Anne. I’m really looking forward to each of these and hope that the discipline of the challenge will get me back into a reading groove. Good luck with your reviewing, publishers are very lucky to have you as an advocate for their books 😊 I hope you are able to enjoy reading in the sunshine today, that’s certainly what I’m aiming for, although I will doubtless be distracted by the need to do a spot of gardening at some point!

  3. Oh I had all good plans to join u with this and then forgot! I might make a pile up later and throw in a sneaky slightly late post!
And don’t feel guilty at all – we all have books that slip down the tbr when we’re busy, and you’ve certainly sounded busy this year!
Good luck squeezing in some reading and adjusting to the lack of Summer hol!

    1. Thanks Rachael! It has taken me 5 months to realise that I can’t work with the same intensity that I did at school without the safety net of school holidays in which to recover! Have actually taken my lunch breaks this week & found some energy for reading in the evenings 😊
I do hope you join the challenge, you always seem to be reading an interesting selection of books 📚

    1. Thank you Ellie…& you are not alone re. NHS libraries! We basically provide evidence-based information to clinicians & patients & the public across all aspects of healthcare, as well as providing study space & resources & wellbeing resources.
